FITZROY ISLAND
Fitzroy Island is a continental type island only five kilometres from the mainland and about 25 kilometres from Cairns.
The 324 hectares of rainforest are almost completely surrounded by coral reef. Offshore from Fitzroy Island is great for snorkellers. The Island is the third most northerly island in the Great Barrier reef.
Butterflies, bushwalks through eucalypt and tropical rainforests, coral beaches and excellent snorkelling and diving on the reef can also be enjoyed. Walking tracks include a steep climb to a lighthouse with great views.
Sheoak, Indian Beech, Native Nutmeg, Tamarinds and Turpentine as well as native orchids are just a few examples of the exotic flora you'll find on bushwalks through the island.
The Island has a variety of accommodation from a camp ground through to hostel-style units accommodating a few people in bunks to up-market villa units.
