DAYDREAM ISLAND
Daydream Island is the closest of the Whitsunday Islands to Shute Harbour, lying just five kilometres from the mainland. The island features one of the oldest Whitsunday resorts which has recently been spectacularly refurbished.
Just one kilometre long and half a kilometre wide, Daydream is always popular with day visitors as it is only a short ride from the mainland. Of its three beaches one is fringed by outcrops of coral and colourful fishlife. The centre and highest point of the island is a small but dense jungle of tropical vegetation inhabited by parrots and tiny sunbirds.
There is snorkelling along beaches with fringing coral, and water-sports including sailboarding, jet-skiing, parasailing, coral viewing in glass bottomed boats, and reef fishing. Play tennis, volleyball, badminton or croquet. Learn to dive or try sea kayaking. You can now also play mini golf on the Island at a spectacular putt putt golf course that needs to be seen to be believed.
To get there you can fly direct to nearby Hamilton Island Great Barrier Reef Airport from most Australian cities and transfer to Daydream Island by ferry. Or fly into Proserpine/Whitsunday Coast Airport, travel by coach to Shute Harbour, and then by ferry over to Daydream Island. Helijet or seaplane transfers are available from the mainland and Hamilton Island.
